The Benefits of Meditation and How to Meditate

When you think of meditation, what comes to mind? A Buddhist monk sitting atop a mountain in repose for hours on end? Hippies with their alternative lifestyle? The truth is meditation is a powerful tool in maintaining lower stress levels, increasing wellbeing and creating more positive thoughts and emotions. Just 15 minutes a day can create beneficial results in your life, clearing your thoughts, making you feel calmer and lowering stress levels.Meditating by the Sea

The Meditation

1. Sit in a comfortable position, in a chair or on the floor, legs crossed or uncrossed, there is no right position as long as you are comfortable but not in a position where you may fall asleep.
2. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Breathe in and out slowly through your nose, focusing on the sensation of your breathing.
3. Thoughts will enter your head, let them come and go without paying them too much attention and refocus on your breathing.
4. Start with 5 minutes a day and gradually build up to 15 minutes at a time or more if you feel like staying there.

Meditation is a skill, which requires practice like any other skill. At first it may seem as if your mind is crowded with thoughts and the peaceful state you aspire to is fleeting. With time and practice your ability to meditate will improve and you will find that you have less intrusive thoughts and are more focused. Stick with it and find out for yourself the benefits of regular meditation in your life.
