Gratitude and Happiness

The simple act of gratitude can be transformational. Too often we examine our lives and life situations from a perspective of what is missing, what we would like to change or what we would like more of. So how can we cultivate more gratitude in our lives? If we simply look at what we do have and what is going right in our lives we can significantly alter our mood and our outlook which can improve our overall quality of life.

Thank you note

Ask yourself, what have I got to be grateful for? Then list 10 things. I have listed some idea to get you thinking, they may not all be applicable to you but there should be something on this list to get you started.

  1. Who are the people in your life who add value?
  2. Do you have any pets?
  3. Do you have a job?
  4. Do you have the ability to see, hear, taste, smell, walk and talk?
  5. Do you have somewhere to live?
  6. Do you have access to clean water and healthy food?
  7. How great is the country you live in?
  8. Do you have hobbies?
  9. Did you do anything fun today?
  10. What are your talents?

Read back through what you have written and really think about each point. How lucky are you for what you already have today? Try to do this on a daily basis choosing five things you have to be grateful for. By changing your focus from what is missing in your life to what you already have can greatly improve your happiness. Make gratitude a daily practice and see how your happiness increases.
