Goal Setting with Smart Goals

In order to be effective and achieve in life it’s necessary to know what you are aiming for and how you are going to get there. Setting goals is an important component in maximizing your effectiveness and feeling a sense of achievement. They are beneficial in both long and short-term aims. Using SMART goals will enable you to feel a sense of control over your life and give you a clear sense of purpose. SMART goals are goals, which are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timed. They an be used for short term goals, 3 months or less; intermediate goals, 6-12 months; and long term goals, 1 year or more.

Specific:

What is it that you are trying to achieve? Who is involved in this? Why is this important? Where will it occur? How will it happen? Know exactly what it is you want to achieve.

Measurable:

How can this goal be measured in terms of cost or amount? How will you know when it is achieved? Having criteria you can measure makes your goals more achievable.

Attainable:

How can you reach this goal? Can you find a way to make your goals a reality? Make sure your goal is something you can imagine yourself reaching, by setting a goal you can imagine achieving you will keep yourself more motivated to continue.

Relevant:

Are you willing to put in the effort to make this work? Is this the right time for you to be setting this goal? Does this fit in with your most important needs or desires? Your goal should be one, which you can see yourself accomplishing, but it should also require you to extend yourself.

Timed:

When do you wish to have this goal completed? Without a set time frame there is no sense of urgency in working towards your goal.

Here is a simple example of setting SMART goals:

Specific: I will pay off $2000.00 of debt in 4 months out of my salary.
Measurable: $2000.00 in 4 months means I need to save $500.00 a month for 4 months.
Attainable: I can reach this goal by putting aside $500.00 out of each months pay, before it gets spent. I earn enough for this to be achievable.
Relevant: This is important for me as I do not like having debt and I wish to start a savings plan once my debt is paid. I am also earning enough money each month to afford this.
Timed: 4 months

Often when we set goals there are obstacles which may stop us from achieving what we desire. These obstacles can be psychological, such as thinking you can’t do it or practical, such as an unexpected bill. Take some time to consider possible obstacles that may hinder your goals and then brainstorm some solutions to these obstacles.
